Kocaeli University Medical School was established in 1995. The first methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolate was detected two years later in a patient transferred from a different city. Six months after this, we detected a small MRSA outbreak in the intensive care unit involving four patients, two of whom had bacteremia, and a staff nasal carrier. All isolates, including the first, appeared to be a single outbreak strain, demonstrated by pulsed field gel electrophoresis profiles which different by at most two bands, identical randomly amplified polymorphic DNA profiles, and identical coagulase gene types by PCR. Antibiogram were identical except that one isolate was additionally resistant to cotrimoxazole. These results show that MRSA isolates can spread between hospitals with infected or colonized patients and can apparently persist in the hospital for six months without causing infection. Screening of asymptomatic patients on wards affected by MRSA or transferred from other hospitals may be helpful in controlling these infections. 相似文献

This study investigated the morphological variation of gibel carp Carassius gibelio collected from various water bodies in Türkiye. The fish samples were obtained from three dams (Karacaören-1, Karakaya, and Keban), two natural lakes (Beyşehir and Suğla), and a river (the Tigris River). The dimorphism in body shape was examined with geometric morphometrics, while elliptic Fourier analysis and shape indices were used to describe the variation in lapilli otoliths (hereafter “otoliths”) and scale shapes. The body of C. gibelio revealed higher variations, particularly in the body depth, snout length, caudal fin, and caudal peduncle, among different stations. Geometric morphometric analysis determined a streamlined body shape of C. gibelio in the Tigris River compared to other stations, while C. gibelio from the natural lakes had a deeper body shape. The body of C. gibelio exhibited a significant homogenous shape between the Beyşehir and Suğla lakes, providing the lowest Procrustes distance. The elliptic Fourier analysis revealed that the otolith shape varied significantly between all stations. However, the scale shape was remarkably similar among nearby areas such as Karacaören dam, Suğla, and Beyşehir lakes. These results evinced high degree of intra-population morphological variation in C. gibelio in response to prevailing environmental conditions that probably facilitate their successful establishment in a novel environment. 相似文献

Due to increased anthropogenic activities, the aquatic environment is exposed to pollutants much more than ever. These pollutants go into the food chain and can pose a health risk to human. Correlatively, Borcka Dam Lake, Turkey has been affected by mining activities since decades. In the present study, therefore, Cu, Pb, As, Zn, Mn, Cd, Cr, and Se concentrations in water, sediment, and different tissues (muscle, gill, liver) of 11 fish species sampled from the lake were analyzed regarding metal(oid)s pollution and potential human health risk through fish consumption. The metal(oid) concentrations in the water were below the limit values recommended by USEPA for aquatic life criteria but sediments were heavily polluted by As, Cu, Pb, and Zn based on Sediment Quality Guideline. The lowest metal(oid) values among tissues for all fish species were determined in muscle (p < 0.05) which was lower than the limits for human consumption declared by European Union Regulation. Target Hazard Quotient and Hazard Index used non-cancer risk estimate which was lower than 1. In the view of these results, the consumption of fish caught from the Borcka Dam Lake may not pose a potential risk to human. 相似文献

Melatonin is the main product of the pineal gland, and trace metals play a critical role in growth and development. The purpose
of this study was to assess the serum zinc (Zn) and magnesium (Mg) levels in pinealec-tomized chicks and their possible interactions
with the development of spinal deformity. Chicks were divided into two equal groups: unoperated controls (group M) and pinealectomized
chicks (group N). Pinealectomies were performed at the age of 3 d. After 8 wk, serum Zn and Mg levels of 10 animals from each
group were measured by spectrophotometric assay. The results of analyses were compared using the Mann-Whitney U-test. The correlation between serum Zn and Mg levels were assessed by Spearman's correlation. In this study, it was obvious
that the serum Zn levels in group N were significantly lower than those in group M (2.8±0.10 vs 4.2±0.14 ppm; p<0.0005). In contrast, Mg levels in group N was high compared with the values in group M, although there was no significant
difference (17.8±0.69 vs 15.7±0.85 ppm; p>0.05). In pinealectomized animals, serum Zn levels declined significantly while serum Mg levels increased, albeit insignificantly.
Thus, there was a moderately positive but not statistically significant correlation between Mg and Zn levels in unoperated
controls (r=0.273, p>0.05), whereas there was a negative but not statistically significant correlation between Zn and Mg levels in pinealectomized
chicks (r=−0.115, p>0.05). In addition, the serum Mg to serum Zn ratio was significantly higher in group N than in the group M control (6.39±0.32
vs 3.75±0.22, respectively; p<0.001). From the results of the current study, it is clear that surgical pinealectomy in newly hatched Hybro Broiler chicks
has a significant effect on serum Zn level. However, the serum Mg did not change significantly. Because serum Mg is not a
good indicator of Mg status in chicks, it is speculated that other tissues, such as muscle or spine, might productively be
explored as a more sensitive Mg biomarker for this model. The present study provides experimental evidence that serum trace
metal levels might be affected in pinealectomized animals because of the lack of its main neurohormone melatonin. 相似文献
